Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969), now called O-Sensei ("Great Teacher"), founded the martial art known today as Aikido.
O-Sensei
devoted himself to hard physical conditioning and studied under the
masters in many traditional martial arts, receiving certificates of
mastery in jujitsu (unarmed combat), kenjitsu (sword fighting), and
sojitsu (spear fighting).
Aikido
has very few punches and kicks. Instead the attacker's force is
redirected into throws, locks, and restraining techniques. Size, age,
and physical strength plays only a small role, as the skilled Aikidoist
is able to redirect the attacker's energy, keeping the attacker in a
constant state of unbalance.
Our sect of study is the Matsukazi Nihon-Ryu Aikido, under the direction of Matsukazi Shito-Ryu Karate, Kobudo, Jujutsu, & Aikido Federation.
